Concert Review: Alestorm x Elvenking

This was my first show at the Deluxe which is an amazing venue in the basement of the Old National Center. It reminds me of a lot of venues in nearby cities where I have been lucky enough to catch good metal shows. I was familiar with the music of both of the bands tonight, but came away with a greater appreciation for both their catalogs. This was a sold out show, and the crowd was ready for the music! It was an energetic concert, and a showstopper all the way to the encores!

Elvenking is a fantasy metal outfit from the ranks of the Italian metal scene. Their set began with the first two songs off of their newest album before they delved into some of their classic pieces which were well received by this audience. “Silverseal” was a highlight for me, and the energy of the audience around me made the music very special. From where I was standing, it was obvious that a large percentage of the audience had come to see this band.

It was a solid set, and it was just long enough to leave me wanting more! Some of their best songs were included at the end of the set, and I really enjoyed “The Wanderer'” and “Elven Legions.” It was their first time in Indianapolis, and I think I speak for this crowd when I hope they come back again.

There was an extended transition as Alestorm did some last minute sound checking! A giant ducky provided the backdrop for their stage, and I was ready for 90 minutes of pirate themed music! When they took the stage, they were dressed like beach partiers, and they proceeded to delve into their set, which is a blend of folk and punk metal!

Paying tribute to the Dropkick Murphys with their intro music, they quickly started “Keelhauled” and continue a fast paced set of songs about sailing and drinking!

“Mexico” was a song I had wanted to hear, and many of the other pieces like “Uzbekistan” and “Magellan’s Expedition” were memorable as well!

When they got to the new song, “Voyage of the Dead Marauder,” they were joined on stage by Empress frontwoman Barbara Blackthorne to sing the female part. She was energetic as she dashed all over the stage, and even came back for one of the encores.

The set finished strong with “P.A.R.T.Y.” and “Shit Boat” before their three song encore took the house down. These were the songs I had been waiting to hear, and they did not disappoint. “Fucked With an Anchor” was very fun and about as cheeky as I expected. They are definitely raw, but they are very entertaining, and talented musicians.

So it was a great night, and I left with a greater appreciation for both Elvenking, and Alestorm. They left this writer hoping to see both of them again, and also a desire to explore their music more fully. That is what good music does, and this was definitely a great concert.
